Workshop for 'Broken Theatre' @ Certain Bird
When the script has disappeared, when the audience is gone, where are the lines between the part you play and the person you are? We are all victims of the script. We are all playing a part. 10 artists meet in a ghost theater. At the cost of each other, they grapple with love, humiliation and loss.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT
Created in this time of isolation and fear, Broken Theater is a letter to our time, born of a deep desire to connect.
One day, many years from now, I hope our daughter will watch this film and see that our bodies can tell a thousand stories of longing, risk, desire and love. I hope she sees how complicated it is to watch someone fall and fail; how difficult it is to bear humiliation, admit our contradictions, and ultimately change.
This film is for all the artists and humans who get lost in the parts they play, forget their lines, and lose their way in a dream. This is for everyone changed by the imprint of human connection.

AMOC & LA Opera present: Gallup
Filmmaker Blackhorse Lowe's new Digital Short features music by Matthew Aucoin and poetry by Jake Skeets. A Navajo artist (like Lowe) who grew up in Gallup, Skeets gives his hometown a leading role in his poetry. Lowe's film is an unflinching yet tender portrait of the city in 2021, seen through the eyes of the supernatural.
This Digital Short will be released on Friday, May 28, at 11am
Musicians from AMOC (American Modern Opera Company): Emi Ferguson (bass flute/flute/piccolo); Miranda Cuckso (violin); Coleman Itzkoff (cello); Jonny Allen (percussion); Conor Hanick (piano)
This project is generously supported by a consortium of donors to LA Opera's Contemporary Opera Initiative, chaired by Nancy and Barry Sanders, and by a special gift from Dr. Stephen Erhart.
Co-produced by AMOC (American Modern Opera Company)

...thus far and no further: a LIVE concert series
Longtime friends, composer Michael Herschand sculptor Christopher Cairns have closely collaborated for almost two decades, Cairns' sculpture populating the earliest productions of Hersch's monodrama, On the Threshold of Winter, amongst other projects.
Years ago, Cairns would host small private concert events in his studio which would feature Hersch's work, often with musicians who have subsequently become those most closely associated with his music.
In the face of the pandemic both artists decided to craft a series of concerts to take place during the 2020/21 season, but this time Cairns opening the studio space to the public. The series will include five world premieres, and many works seldom heard in the U.S.

Emi Ferguson and Ruckus @ Caramoor
Flutist Emi Ferguson (“wonderful,” The New York Times; “irresistibly vital,” Portland Press Herald) is joined by the continuo band Ruckus in a wild technicolor romp through some of Bach’s most playful and transcendent works reimagined and realized for 21st-century fans of 18th-century performance practice. Having earned widespread critical acclaim for its fresh, visceral approach to early music, Ruckus’ core members form the baroque equivalent of a rhythm section: guitars, keyboards, cello, bassoon, and bass. The ensemble aims to fuse the early-music movement’s questing, creative spirit with the grit, groove and jangle of American roots music, creating a unique sound of “rough-edged intensity” (The New Yorker).
Immediately following the concert, there will be a Q&A with members of Ruckus and Emi Ferguson, with an opportunity for the audience at home to ask questions; moderated by Caramoor’s Artistic Director, Kathy Schuman.
Artists
Emi Ferguson, baroque flute
Ruckus
Clay Zeller-Townson, baroque bassoon
Coleman Itzkoff, baroque cello
Doug Balliett, baroque bass
Paul Holmes Morton, baroque guitar, banjo
Adam Cockerham, theorbo
Elliot Figg, harpsichord, organ

HEIR: Heifetz Ensemble in Residence
The Heifetz Institute will launch the first-ever Heifetz Ensemble-in-Residence Program, or HEIR, to take place in two sessions from January through May 2021. Just as the creation of the Heifetz Virtual Institute was an innovative and industry-leading response to the pandemic (the vast majority of summer festivals effectively suspended operations), the HEIR program is a creative alternative to the Institute’s acclaimed Heifetz on Tour program, designed to offer real-world performance experience and outreach opportunities for our most talented and engaging young alums.
Each of the two sessions will consist of either a string quartet or a piano trio composed of outstanding alumni of the Heifetz Institute, who will live and work in our home city of Staunton, VA for a two month period. Housing, meals, and salaries will be provided for the duration of the eight weeks. Intensive weekly rehearsal, performance, and production schedules will be prepared for the ensembles, augmented by the educational and outreach elements outlined above. Clear and strict policies regarding quarantine periods and social distancing will be enforced to ensure the safety of our artists and of our community
