Karen Dreyfus, director of chamber music at Thornton, leads faculty and students of the Division of Classical Performance and Composition in a program of French chamber music, featuring the Poulenc Trio, Saint-Saens Septet, and Franck Piano Quintet.
Faculty performers include Bernadene Blaha, Glenn Dicterow, Kevin Fitz-Gerald, Ben Hong, Thomas Hooten, Bing Wang, and Michele Zukovsky. They will be joined by Thornton students Lieza Hansen, Coleman Itkoff, Mann-Wen Lo, Sam Shukan, Justin Woo, and more.
Coleman performs solo works by Bach and Peter Vasks in a private performance for members of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.

LACO’s 50th Anniversary Season launches with a free community concert held at the California Plaza Water Court. In partnership with Grand Performances and The Colburn School, this concert features Venezuelan-born maestro Carlos Izcaray who will provide commentary in both English and Spanish. Two top students from the Colburn School join LACO as soloists: 14-year-old Music Academy student Kevin Miura on violin and 22-year-old Conservatory of Music student Cristina Mateo Sáez on clarinet.
Yellow Barn, an international center for chamber music, encourages discovery in the studio, classroom, and concert hall; explores the craft of musical interpretation; and illuminates our world through the unique experience of music. Twice awarded the ASCAP/Chamber Music America Award for Adventurous Programming, Yellow Barn’s innovative approach to lifelong education for musicians and audiences, commitment to quality and a unified aesthetic, and programs that focus listeners in new ways, set it apart from any other chamber music center in this country.
Based in Putney, Vermont with a national agenda and a growing international presence, Yellow Barn draws young professional musicians from the United States, Europe, Middle East, and Asia. Since 1969, participants in Yellow Barn’s summer festival have explored a music spanning a wide range of eras and genres alongside faculty members who are among the most highly regarded performers and pedagogues of our time. One of those faculty members spoke for the entire community when he said, “Yellow Barn is an artistic center of gravity for me.”
In addition, Yellow Barn has established the Young Artists Program for performers and composers ages 13-20, known for the collaborative creation and performance of 12 new works each session; the Artist Residencies, which is the first retreat program in the country for performing musicians at all stages of their careers; collaborations with “Yellow Barns” in other fields, notably a concert series at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas that regularly hosts Music From Yellow Barn; and partnerships that transform typical business practices, including a relationship that far exceeds a typical rental agreement through shared space and curricular workshops at the Greenwood School for boys ages 12-18 with language-based learning differences.
Yellow Barn Music Haul is the broadest interpretation of Yellow Barn’s mission. The first self-contained traveling stage, Yellow Barn Music Haul redefines what a concert hall can be. It brings music to grammar schools and conservatories, urban neighborhoods and arts districts, city lots and open fields. It plays for people regardless of their experience with or knowledge of music, their attention captured in the unexpected moment. With Yellow Barn Music Haul we realize music’s fundamental purpose, and inherent ability, to communicate in ways that defy definition and move us without explanation.
Cellist David Wells and pianist Janet Wells founded Yellow Barn as an informal summer retreat for David's students at the Manhattan School of Music. The Wellses' neighbors embraced this vibrant addition to their community, which was named by a participant for the color of the Wellses' farm house, cooking meals for the musicians and organizing concerts for the town. Over the ensuing decades, and under the leadership of Artistic Director Seth Knopp, Yellow Barn has evolved into one of the finest chamber music training and performance centers in the world, renowned for its unique philosophy and commitment to excellence.

He will perform with his musical collaborator of several years, pianist Alin Melik-Adamyan. The program will feature the Debussy Cello Sonata, Schubert's Arpeggione, as well as short works by Schumann, Schedrin, Chopin and others. Johannes Moser joins forces with eleven Southern California cellists to perform an exciting variety of works written for up to twelve cellists, running the gamut from Bach to contemporary pop and everything in between.
Returning to Walt Disney Concert Hall, maestro Carl St.Clair and the USC Thornton Symphony are joined by Keyboard Studies faculty members Bernadene Blaha and Kevin Fitz-Gerald for an evening of Mozart and Strauss. Blaha and Fitz-Gerald will be featured in Mozart’s artful Piano Concerto No. 10, K.365, for two pianos. In the second half of the program, the ensemble will perform Richard Strauss’s spectacular Alpine Symphony, Op. 64.

The Amicus Trio presents a dazzeling program of Russian and Armenian music featuring the Piano Trio in F# minor by Arno Babajanian, which Shostakovich called "One of the masterpieces of the 20th century," and the Prokovief Cello Sonata in C Major.
Violinist Melody Chang, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and USC's Thornton School of Music, was the first prize winner of the 2013 Third Hong Kong International Violin Competition. Cellist Coleman Itzkoff, a graduate of USC's Thornton School of Music, is the 2016 artist-in-residence for Heifetz On Tour. Itzkoff has performed at the Aspen, La Jolla, Yellow Barn & Music@Menlo festivals. Alin Melik-Adamian, also a graduate of USC's Thornton School of Music, took first prize at the Los Angeles Liszt International Competition and won the 2014 MTNA State Piano Competition.
Explore the musical and political roots of Kurt Weill (“Mack the Knife,” “Moon of Alabama”) in a special evening of performance and conversation with violin virtuoso and humanitarian Daniel Hope and distinguished pianist, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra music director, and USC Thornton professor Jeffery Kahane. They will share insights on Weill's compositions, life, and career as a young composer in 1920s Berlin, before he fled Nazi Germany and became one of Broadway's most enduring songwriters.
LACO musicians and USC Thornton faculty and students will join Hope and Kahane in a performance featuring Weill's major chamber works, including the Sonata for Cello and Piano, String Quartet No. 1, early songs, and vocal duets, as well as excerpts from Little Threepenny Music. Hope will also join students for a performance of Gideon Klein's great String Trio, composed in the Terezin concentration camp shortly before the 26-year-old composer was deported to Auschwitz.
Coleman Itzkoff and Pianist Alin Melik-Adamyan will perform the first movement of the Weill Sonata for Cello and Piano.
